COMMERCE CITY — Local girl scouts joined by firefighters from the South Adams County Volunteer Fire Department teamed up March 9 to brighten the day for residents at the Colorado State Veterans Home in Aurora. Isabella Heinmiller and Sydney Ward, members of Girl Scout Troop 3406 and fourth-grade students at Turnberry Elementary in Commerce City, delivered more than 100 boxes of cookies to veterans with the assistance of South Adams County volunteer firefighters.
The delivery was the culmination of a contest that began when Heinmiller went to her local South Adams County fire station, where her father is a firefighter, to sell Girl Scout cookies.
One firefighter offered to buy six cases of cookies (72 boxes of cookies) and have them donated back to the veterans home. The donation spurred a challenge to see how many boxes of cookies could be purchased and donated for veterans. Working together, 111 boxes of cookies were purchased and collected for delivery.
