Voters making decisions through the ballot box is a good thing – has been for 230-something years. There are some rather frivolous items that come before the voters that are best left alone. But we’ll save those gripes.
So you can imagine how happy we are that the question of a third term for the Adams County district attorney goes to the voters in November. But we’ll go beyond that.
Get rid of the term limit rule for other elected offices that require specific expertise and knowledge.
There is a certain amount of politics that goes with any elected office. Everyone knows that. But unlike a county commissioner or a coroner (who does not have to have a degree in forensic science), it’s rather helpful if certain people have experience in their chosen field and aren’t tossed out of office because their time is up.
Aside from a lack of knowledge and continuity in an office where specific smarts are a good idea, term limits violate the voters’ right to decide when an elected official’s time is up.
That’s not what anyone had in mind when we were given the right to vote.
