Investigation closes I-270 for seven hours

A decision on charges is pending for a 31-year-old man after an early morning shooting HJan. 13 that closed I-270 for eight hours.

Ryan Schenk was arrested after treatment at a local hospital for injuries. He was taken to the Adams County Detention Facility.

Commerce City officials said Schenk was a fugitive but declined to release any other details. Television station KMGH reported he was a fugitive from El Paso County.

The incident began around 3 a.m. Authorities said Schenk was behind the wheel of a car that collided with a guardrail on I-270 between Vasquez Boulevard and the Platte River. Authorities aren't saying when Shenck was shot or who fired the shots. A Colorado state trooper and a Commerce City police officer are on administrative leave.

The Adams County Critical Incident Team recovered a firearm at the scene that does not belong to officers. The investigation continued. No responders were injured.

I-270 was closed in both directions for more than eight hours so investigators could collect evidence. The closure caused serious traffic delays along Colorado Boulevard in Commerce City as well as the westbound side of I-70 from I-225 to the I-270 interchange.
