LAKEWOOD — Considering that Prairie View’s RJ Ramirez rolled his ankle this spring and had to spend time on the sidelines, getting to the state 5A track meet in the 100-meter dash is an accomplishment.
But after the preliminary heat of the event at Jeffco Stadium May 15, Ramirez wasn’t pleased at all.
“It was a terrible run,” he said. “The start was great. I came out in second. Then they started pulling away from me. They had that third gear. I had to stay relaxed, which I did. I don’t know. It wasn’t my day I guess.”
Ramirez’ time was 11.29 seconds, good for 16th place.
“I placed last year as a sophomore,” he said. “The injury in the midseason, I think, might have done it. The week before my injury, I ran a 10.9 (at the Mullen Runners Roost meet in late April). I came out of my injury 2 ½, three weeks later, and it was like an 11.15, and I’ve been sitting there. It pulled me back. It was hard.”
Ramirez went into the state meet as the seventh-fastest 100-meter runner in class 5A. But after his preliminary heat, he knew he was in trouble.
“That won’t to do it,” Ramirez said. “This is the faster heat coming up.”
