Officials at Adams County School District 14 are searching for a new principal to lead Adams City High School.

Officials have narrowed the search to three candidates. The high school’s assistant principal Caroll Duran is in the running for the job, as is Jennifer Abeyta-Cifuentes, who is an administrator at Prairie View High School in School District 27J. Mark Roberts, the principal at Aurora Central High School, also is a candidate.

Superintendent Javier Abrego interviewed the candidates. He’ll make the final decision on who to hire as principal, according to district spokeswoman Janelle Asmus. They also met with community members in a meeting.

“(The superintendent) is considering what he learned during the interviews he conducted with them and matching it to the feedback from stakeholders,” Asmus said.

Abrego would like to have the new principal in place by the second week of January, according to Asmus.

Some 28 people applied for the job. District staffers submitted information on the qualities they would like the new principal to have.

As part of the hiring process, the department solicited staff for the qualities they would like to see in their new principal. Staffers came up with a list of10 qualities, Asmus said.

Among those qualities is the desire for a principal who can build relationships with students, parents, teachers and the community, Asmus said. Staffers also would like the new principal to be collaborative and transparent.

The school’s current principal Gionni Thompson has been tapped to be the district’s director of secondary schools, where he will oversee the middle and high schools. Thompson also will oversee a school improvement plan and lead efforts to improve secondary schools.

“Right now, he is serving in both capacities until we can get a new principal named and brought on board,” Asmus said.

Adams 14 ushered in Abrego as its new superintendent this year, who has a strong reputation as a leader, Asmus said. Abrego created the director of secondary schools job, and Thompson accepted it, she said.
