UPDATE: Rec center to close early

-A A +A

COMMERCE CITY -- Commerce City's recreation center will close at 4 p.m. Friday, and there will be no youth basketball games or gymnastics Saturday. The recreation center plans to open at 8 Saturday morning.

That's the latest round of cancelations and early closures brought on by the mammoth snowstorm pounding most of the Front Range. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 5 a.m. Saturday for most of Adams County, including Commerce City. Spokeswoman Michelle Halstead said the conditions were expected continue through Friday night and into Saturday.

"The city will remain on accident alert as long as conditions require, possibly through tomorrow afternoon," she said.

City offices were able to open Friday but on a two-hour delayed schedule.

The city's nine plows have been out clearing the roadways and will be in operation throughout the storm. Primary arterial streets within the city are clear, Halstead said. Crews are now working on secondary streets throughout the city.

"The primary focus of the city's public works department will be to keep the main streets as clear as possible throughout the evening," Halstead said.

Adams 14 schools closed Friday because of the storm. The cancelation of classes also means the Eagles' basketball games against Hinkley High School will not be played. There are two weeks left in the regular season. No make-up dates have been announced. The Eastern Metro Athletic Conference swimming meet was canceled, as was the EMAC wrestling tournament at Rangeview High School, which was scheduled for Saturday.

The Colorado High School Activities Association won't allow either meet to be contested Sunday, and it nixed the idea of holding either meet Monday because it's too close to those sports' next competitions. The state 5A swimming meet starts Friday, Feb. 10, the same day as the regional wrestling tournaments begin
