Brian Bierwiler, fire inspector, looks over some statistics about structure fires.

It's thrilling to spin around with a sparkler in hand, making swirly patterns, trying to spell your name … but, it's dangerous. Sparklers burn at 1,200 degrees.

That's pretty hot.

Hot enough that if the firework is dropped in a dry field, it doesn't take much to start a huge fire, said Brian Bierwiler, a fire inspector for South Adams County Fire Department, 6550 E. 72nd Ave.

Bierwiler said that wood burns at 575 degrees, no match for a “harmless” sparkler.
