  • Man draws 45-year sentence for local murder

    BRIGHTON – Forty-five years.

    That's the prison sentence for DeShawn Anthony Benain, 24. He murdered 21-year-old Sydney Lynn Lewis in Commerce City almost a year ago.

  • Officer-involved shooting leaves man dead

    An Adams County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot and killed a man at Pinetree Village Apartments Tuesday, Jan. 16.

    Neither the man’s name, nor the sheriff’s deputy’s name, was immediately released.

    The deputy used his Taser and eventually fired his weapon at the man, who was in the hallway at the apartments at 7520 Broadway, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

  • Denver deputy faces felony menacing charge

    A Denver deputy sheriff faces a charge of felony menacing in connection with a Thursday, Nov. 9, incident in Commerce City.

    Dave Young, the district attorney for the 17th Judicial District, filed the charges last week. Authorities say Bret Martin Carbone, 46, pointed a gun at a process server who came to the deputy’s home.

    Authorities did not release details about why the server went to Carbone’s home or how the felony menacing charge might affect his employment.

  • Commerce City man charged with attempted murder after attacking wife

    Commerce City resident Derek Michael Johnston faces attempted first-degree murder and assault charges after attacking his wife in an incident Wednesday, Sept. 6.

    The court also has charged Johnson 37, with child abuse, as the family's 19-month-old child was in the home at the time of the alleged assault, the 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office said Friday in a press statement.

    Commerce City resident Landon Orr faces with child abuse charges after his 3-year-old son shot himself in the arm, the 17th Judicial District Attorney's office said in a press statement.

    Landon Orr, 22, left a 9mm handgun out on a table after cleaning it in his home at 9726 Nucla St. in Commerce City on Wednesday, June 28, the district attorney's office said. His 3-year-old son picked up the gun and shot himself. The child has recovered from the gunshot wound.

  • DUI habitual offender sentenced to 10 years

    Albaro Bustillos, 53, of Hudson, was sentenced to 10 years in jail on Thursday, May 4, after a jury found him guilty recently of his eighth DUI.

    Bustillos received his first drunk driving charge in 1994. He has been convicted of similar charges over the past two decades in Westminster, in Commerce City, in Brighton and in Weld County.

  • Man arrested in 1992 sex assault case

    A previously cold sexual assault case from 1992 is being brought back to life,  after a man was arrested recently for allegedly stabbing and sexually assaulting a woman in her home.

    Dionicio Ramos-Ascencio was arrested and charged with multiple counts of sexual assault and attempted first-degree murder in connection with a 1992 case. District Attorney Dave Young said Monday, May 15. Ramos-Ascencio also was charged with assault, burglary, and two counts of a crime of violence in the attack on a woman in Commerce City on July 26, 1992.

  • Commerce City police exonerated in killing

    Commerce City Police officers who shot and killed a man on Feb. 5th following a standoff will have no criminal charges filed against them, according to a district attorney’s office statement.
