  • Help protect our Adams County water and keep it clean

        Editor:
Healthy water equals healthy people. We can’t take clean water for granted, especially since stormwater poses a threat. When a car is washed in a driveway, the soap, dirt and oil end up in the nearest creek where kids hang out or pets take a drink.

  • Too much from the left on the opinion pages

        Editor:
Your newspaper carries, on a regular basis, the opinions written by Donald Kaul of Ann Arbor, Mich.
It is not clear why you would regularly feature a columnist who may represent your views, but not the views of the majority of your readers. He continually attacks anyone who does not hold his far-left, liberal views.

  • New gun ban won’t work

        Dear Politicians:
As you consider pending legislation in response to the recent tragedies at Aurora and Newtown, please keep the following thoughts in mind.
Reinstating the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban would be a mistake. It didn’t work last time, why would anyone think it will work this time?
There were nearly twice as many mass killings while the ban was in effect than after it expired.

  • Stormwater fee fiasco a disgrace to the county

        Dear Adams County Commissioners,
I am embarrassed and ashamed to live in a county that would treat its own  residents this way.
A self-created stormwater fee of $80 per year is a disgrace. How can you, the board of commissioners justify imposing a fee of this magnitude on its own residents without asking for a vote on this tax?

  • Appreciation for the 27J Motorcycle Run and Car Show

    Editor:
We would like to take this opportunity to say a very special “Thank you” to Iron Planes 3-4 Combat Vets Motorcycle Association (CVMA) for leading the 27J Motorcycle Run on Oct. 13.
This group lea the ride and turned out to support our students’ fundraising efforts in weather that was less than ideal. Members from Fort Collins to Denver Iron Planes CVMA 3-4 came out to support 27J students. A special thank you to the leaders of the ride, Oiler, Joker Pitbull, Scrounger & Highway.

  • Vote no on 1A

    Editor:
As a citizen, voter and former county commissioner, I don’t approve of the voters/taxpayers of Adams County getting deceived into thinking that five commissioners are going to make the county run any better, and that a different method of commissioner selection is needed to ensure representation, just because the county is growing. And that five commissioners are going to be less susceptible to misbehavior.

  • A long road of recovery ahead of us

    Editor:
It took FDR at least eight years to get us out of the Great Depression. In fact, the only thing that really ended the Great Depression was WWII.
Why do the American people feel that PresidentObama should have made much more progress in restoring our economy, when he inherited the worst mess since the Great Depression and has gotten no help from the Republicans in Congress?

  • Sidewalks save lives

On Aug. 28, we lost another young person to a tragic hit-and-run accident. Shane Hale, 19, was hit near 120th and Peoria on Saturday night and left in a ditch to die. A passerby found his body and called for help, but Shane did not make it. I live less than half a block from where this happened and yet did not hear or see anything.

  • Refocus the debate

  • Reflections on the track

    Editor:
The greyhound dog track is no more. I don’t know whether to be relieved or sorry.
I remember still summer nights when I could hear the dogs barking and the announcer’s voice. We could hear them all over the neighborhood. I sat with people on the Route 48 bus leaving downtown headed for the dog track. The people had racing forms spread out on their laps, and they religiously perused those forms as if the forms were a savior.
