  • CHSAA committee recommends new RPi splits

     AURORA – The state's use of the so-called Ratings Performance Index appears to be gaining a foothold.

  • More baseball games, longer baseball season

     AURORA – Prairie View baseball coach Mark Gonzales had one word to describe a vote that extended the state's high-school baseball season.

    "Exciting."

    Starting in 2019, Colorado's baseball teams will be able to play 23 games, an increase of four contests. The vote by the Colorado High School Activities Association's legislative council was unanimous Jan. 25. 

    The state's coaches clamored for years about adding extra games.

  • Wrestling: Adams City places four at Top of the Rockies

    LAFAYETTE – Two, second-place finishes highlighted Adams City's appearance at the annual Top of the Rockies wresstling tournament over the weekend.

    Nicholas Gonzales (126 pounds) and Christian Rowell (170) took second in their respective weight classes. Gavin Deaguero (152) was fourth, while 120-pounder Jordan Griego finished sixth.

  • Wrestling: Top of Rockies beckons Adams City HS

    LAFAYETTE -- As of early afternoon Jan. 20, three Adams City wrestlers placed in his weight class at the prestigious Top of the Rockies wrestling tournament at Centaurus High School.

    Nichols Gonzales won three matches to move into the semifinals at 126 pounds. Gavin Deaguero followed the same script at 152 pounds, as did Christian Rowell at 170 pounds.

    Jordan Griego (120) remains alive in the consolation bracket.

    The Top of the Rockies tournament is on a par with, if not somewhat better than the state wrestling meet.

  • Boys basketball .. Eagles romp past Denver West
  • Girls basketball: Denver South beats Adams City

    Denver South scored 26 points in the third quarter and went on to a 67-30 road win against Adams City Jan. 4.

    The Rebels put three players in double figures. Carly Dilworth had 18 points. Centoria Roberts and Timiya Guevara added 15. Jade Aragon led the Eagles with 15 points. Jennessy Aragon and Alejandra Pena were next with three points.

  • Adams City wrestlers off to Reno

    AURORA – Adams City's Nicholas Gonzales placed fifth at the Reno Tournament of Champions over the weekend. He competed at 126 pounds.

    He lost his first match in the semifinals. Gonzales was the only Eagles' wrestler to place in the tournament.

    Josh Deaguero (138) won three of five matches. Christian Rowell (182) won four of his six matches. Marques Salazar (145) took three of his five matches.

    The Reno tournament came a week after winning three of five matches at the Grandview Duals Dec. 9.

  • Baseball tweaks on the table

    BRIGHTON – Ideas to add more games to the high-school baseball season and to eliminate a round of postseason play could come before the Colorado High School Activities Association next month.

    Both ideas come from the Colorado Dugout Club Coaches Association. The extra four games to a team's schedule are optional and would not count against a team's Ratings Performance Index, the state's guide to determining teams for the state playoffs.
