  • Changing of the guard at the top...

    AURORA – It was his last chance to speak before the Colorado High School Activities Association’s legislative council.

     

    As he did, Paul Angelico made sure to thank the council and his staff. He talked about the past seven years of accomplishments – the introduction of chsaanow.com and chsaatv, the new ratings system to determine state playoff teams in team sports, a new concussion law and the state’s rule governing transfers.

  • CHSAA OKs mercy rule for prep...

    AURORA – The Colorado High School Activities Association’s legislative council approved a mercy rule for all levels of prep basketball April 20 and didn’t approve a change in RPI balance for basketball teams.

  • Last EMAC major of the year for...

    AURORA -- Zoey Sutherland, who didn't break a score of 60 for nine holes before this season, shot a 43-over par 114 to take team medalist honors for Adams City High School at the second Eastern Metro Athletic Conference major golf tournament. The April 25 event was at Fitzsimons Golf Course.

    Coach Kyle Lauchmen said her opening round of the spring season was a 65 over nine holes. Sutherland finished 29th.

    The Eagles' other golfer in the April 25 meet was Bryonna Mullaney, who finished 37th after her round of 123.

  • Adams City's Barrera makes...

    Adams City’s Carlos Barrera didn’t make it to the finals of any running event in the 2015 track season.

    Last year, he made it to two. This year, he’s in line to earn a spot in the state 5A track-and-field meet. It starts May 18 at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

    Barrera sits in 20th place among class 5A 200-meter dash participants. His top time is 22.6 seconds. He’s in 24th place for the class 5A 100-meter dash, where his top time is 11.33.

  • Area track and field rankings

    Here are the latest class 5A track-and-field rankings as of May 2. The top 18 qualify for the state meet, which starts May 18 at Jeffco Stadium.

    Boys 200-meter dash: 23. Carlos Barrera, 22.6 seconds, set at the Weld Central Early Season Invitational March 17. He's about 0.3 of a second away from qualifying.

  • New week, new ACHS golf team on...

    WESTMINSTER – The two Adams City golfers who appeared in the Eastern Metro Athletic Conference north tournament last week did not make it to the first EMAC major of the year.

    Bryonna Mullaney, Angelica Gutierrez and Dylynn Gonzales made up the Eagles' squad for the April 12 tourney at Legacy Ridge Golf Course in Westminster.

  • Track: Eagles capture pair of...

    KEENESBURG – Adams City's Carlos Barrera took first place in the boys 100-meter dash at the ninth annual Weld Central Rebel Roundup April 7. He turned in a time of 11.33 seconds.

    Teammate Jacob Amador won the 200-meter dash. His time was 23 seconds flat.

  • Tee time for ACHS golfers

    FORT LUPTON – It’s early in the season. But two things seem to be sure things for Adams City golf coach Kyle Lauchmen.

    He’s not sure how many players will show up for tournament play. Two – Zoey Sutherland and Jacelle Perez – played in the Eastern Metro Athletic Conference’s north area schools tournament at Coyote Creek Golf Course April 6. This is Sutherland’s first year at organized golf. It’s the third year for Perez.

  • Basketball mercy rule up for...

    AURORA – Basketball may become the next high-school sport to adopt a mercy rule. 

    The Colorado High School Athletics and Activities’ decision-making group, its legislative council, is due to take up that issue – among others – at its spring meeting. It starts at 8:30 a.m., Thursday, April 20, at the Radisson Hotel Southeast, 3100 S. Vaughn Way.

  • World Cup qualifier comes to...

    CHICAGO – U.S. Soccer chose Dick's Sporting Goods Park to host a FIFA World Cup qualifier between the United States and Trinidad & Tobago.

    The match begins at 5:50 p.m., June 8. It will be televised live on FS1 and Univision.

    The U.S. is in fourth place in the qualifying standings. Six teams are in the final round of World Cup qualifying. Come June 11, the men's national team will be in Mexico City for another qualifier against regional rival Mexico.
