Here we go again .. blizzard blasts area

-A A +A

It's déja vu all over again.

Another major storm is due to hit the area this afternoon and tonight. Blizzard conditions are expected later in the afternoon through Thursday morning, so authorities are discouraging travel.

As of 10:20 a.m., only one event had been canceled. That was the Coffee with a Cop program at McDonald's in Belle Creek, which was set for Thursday, April 11. City offices were to close at 1 p.m. The Rocky Mountain Arsenal Wildlife Refuge closes at 2 p.m. Adams County School District 14 canceled after-school activities as well.

Adams County closed its offices early, as did the sheriff's department.

We anticipate more closures later today and tonight.

The American Red Cross offered some safety tips to deal with the storm. Heat your home safely. Keep a proper area around space heaters free from obstacles. Place it on a hard, level, non-flammable surface, such as a ceramic tile floor. Don't leave fireplaces unattended in the fire place. Don't use a cooking range or oven to heat your house. Turn off portable space heaters when you leave a room or go to sleep.

As for clothing, wear layers. Be careful when shoveling snow in cold temperatures. Check on the elderly and people living alone. Bring your pets inside.

Authorities are discouraging travel. But if you have to, wear your seat belt. Don't follow too closely. Don't use cruise control. Don't pass snow plows.

We'll update later.
