Reunion Elementary School is expected to provide an “illuminating” experience for students through its $22 million design when it opens this fall at 11021 Landmark Drive in Commerce City.

“Studies have shown that day-lighting is very important to how kids learn,” said Carson Shields, a representative Denver-based Hord Coplan Macht Architects, the school design firm. “All the windows face north or south in classrooms, and we made sure to design with day-lighting in mind.

Architects lowered the windows in preschool and kindergarten classrooms to the appropriate height in the new school. And some of the windows were tinted to prevent glare, Shields said.

The 62,416-square-foot school also features a canopy entryway and metal and wood panels on the walls that are intended to simulate a small-town feel.

“Parents and students are very excited to have a school in their neighborhood that they can walk to,” said David Felten, Reunion principal. “We are committed to providing the best learning environment for our students and engaging with our parents.”

The floor is polished concrete and the hallway is meant to be like a “Main Street” through the whole building, Felton said. Panels also bring color into the space, he said. The entryway wood is resourced from Colorado native beetle-kill pine.

Classroom walls are painted a colorful pallet of reds, blues, grays and light tans, that school planners believe will open children’s minds to creativity and new thinking. There’s also an outdoor classroom and three communal spaces. The walls of these shared communal spaces are sprayed with an adhesive that allows kids to write and draw on them.

Reunion Elementary is scheduled to open to around 300 students from kindergarten to fifth grade and around 40 staff members Thursday, Aug 17. The Reunion School office is scheduled to open Monday, July 24, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 9.
