  • Regional wrestling: Nine from Adams City move to state meet

    Adams City will send nine wrestlers to the state 5A wrestling tournament at Pepsi Center. It starts Thursday, Feb. 15.

    Three – Nick Gonzales (126 pounds), Gavin Deaguero (152) and Christian Rowell (170) -- won regional titles. Josh Deaguero wound up second at 138 pounds.

    Thomas Olson was third at 160 pounds. Jordan Griego (120), Niko Suazo (182), Efrain Tinoco (195) and Marques Salazar (145) were fourth. 

  • Regional wrestling: Eleven from Adams City still in tournament

    Seven Adams City wrestlers can finish no worse than sixth place in their respective weight classes at the class 5A Region 2 tournament at Adams City.

    They are Thomas Olson (160 pounds), Gavin Deaguero (152), Jordan Griego, the Eagles' 120-pounder, Joshua Deaguero (138), Marques Salazar (145), Christian Rowell (170) and Nicholas Gonzales (126). Gonzales was on the mat a total of 2:03 in his two wins. Deaguero needed 3:37 to pin his first two opponents.

  • Swimming: Top-ten finish for Eagles' relay team

    THORNTON – Nicole Suchilt, Avelina Anaya, Jocelyn DeLaCruz and Litzy Renteria swam to a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at ths Eastern Metro Athletic Conference meet Feb. 2-3 at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center. The time was 2:09.

    The Eagles' 400- freestyle relay team (Aspen Amador, Jocelyn DeLaCruz, Michelle Espinosa and Viviana DeLaCruz) finished 13th in a time of 5:09.01.

  • Two EMAC wrestling titles for Adams City

    BRIGHTON – Adams City took home a pair of Eastern Metro Athletic Conference wrestling titles Feb. 3 at Brighton High School.

    Nicholas Gonzales won the 126-pound title. Christian Rowell took home the 170-pound championship.

    Elsewhere, Jordan Griego was second at 120 pounds. Thomas Olson was second at 160 pounds, and Niko Suazo was the runner-up at 182 pounds. Nico Sanchez took third at 106 pounds. Marco Padilla was third at 132 pounds.

    Adams City was third in the team point standings.

  • CHSAA committee recommends new RPi splits

     AURORA – The state's use of the so-called Ratings Performance Index appears to be gaining a foothold.

  • More baseball games, longer baseball season

     AURORA – Prairie View baseball coach Mark Gonzales had one word to describe a vote that extended the state's high-school baseball season.

    "Exciting."

    Starting in 2019, Colorado's baseball teams will be able to play 23 games, an increase of four contests. The vote by the Colorado High School Activities Association's legislative council was unanimous Jan. 25. 

    The state's coaches clamored for years about adding extra games.

  • Wrestling: Adams City places four at Top of the Rockies

    LAFAYETTE – Two, second-place finishes highlighted Adams City's appearance at the annual Top of the Rockies wresstling tournament over the weekend.

    Nicholas Gonzales (126 pounds) and Christian Rowell (170) took second in their respective weight classes. Gavin Deaguero (152) was fourth, while 120-pounder Jordan Griego finished sixth.

  • Wrestling: Top of Rockies beckons Adams City HS

    LAFAYETTE -- As of early afternoon Jan. 20, three Adams City wrestlers placed in his weight class at the prestigious Top of the Rockies wrestling tournament at Centaurus High School.

    Nichols Gonzales won three matches to move into the semifinals at 126 pounds. Gavin Deaguero followed the same script at 152 pounds, as did Christian Rowell at 170 pounds.

    Jordan Griego (120) remains alive in the consolation bracket.

    The Top of the Rockies tournament is on a par with, if not somewhat better than the state wrestling meet.

  • Boys basketball .. Eagles romp past Denver West
